Wrist canvas, the watches making fabric straps feel luxurious

Edited By: Liya Shanawas

Few accessories have travelled as far from their origins as the canvas watch strap. It began as a practical answer to life in the trenches during World War I, when soldiers needed something tough and tightly woven on their wrists.

Today it is the quietest way to give a watch some personality. Straps swap out in seconds, so a splash of colour carries almost no risk. Here are ten of the finest canvas-strapped watches, starting at the very top.

Panerai

The Italian house builds its Submersible line for the deep, with a rotating bezel that lets divers track their time underwater. This dark green model has a muted green strap, and its case is eSteel, an alloy that is 98 percent recycled. It is serious engineering with a conscience.

TAG Heuer

This is a modern take on a 1968 design made to mark the America’s Cup sailing race. The woven strap is navy, and it matches the circular brushed dial exactly. It is an old regatta classic in a fresh, tonal look.

Nomos

Glashütte is widely seen as the heart of German watchmaking, and Nomos has worked there since 1990. Its Ahoi has a sky blue dial and a midnight blue woven strap, so the watch looks like the sea from the shore to the horizon.

Longines

The Swiss maker’s diving watch has a beige-to-black ombré dial. Its beige canvas strap is lined with calf leather for comfort, and the watch is water-resistant to 30 bars, which makes it a tough diver that is still gentle on the skin.

Gucci

The G-Timeless has a stainless-steel case and a modest 38mm dial, so it suits any wrist. The nylon canvas strap is striped in red and blue, and the silver dial carries a navy second hand. It is classic Gucci, playful but polished.

This New York-founded brand took its colours from coral reefs, and the dial has a turquoise face, a hot pink-accented bezel and a purple strap, made from salvaged ocean-bound plastic, and the dial is etched with a wave pattern. It is the loudest watch here, and the one with the strongest environmental story.

Maven

The Hong Kong watchmaker credits Modernist art and architecture for its restrained designs. This one pairs a sandblasted steel case with a gray dial, and yellow and sage green accents add a little warmth.

Timex

Timex began in Connecticut in 1854 as the Waterbury Clock Company, and it was among the makers supplying canvas-strapped watches to soldiers in World War I. This version has a navy dial and a case inspired by 1960s styles. Its beachy blue-and-white strap gives it the look of a day at the shore.

Swatch

The brand’s name is short for “second watch,” a nod to the affordable, everyday spirit of its Swiss watches. This one has a green sun-brushed dial and contrasting yellow hands. A green-and-white striped canvas strap and silver lugs complete the look.

Price: ₹20,265

Mvmt

The California brand’s nearly all-green watch has an olive dial, silver hands and graphite lugs. Its strap is ballistic nylon, a material first developed for flak jackets, which makes it a very tough strap for the money.

What stands out is how little the price matters to the idea. A watch under ₹15,000 and one above ₹11 lakh both use fabric once made for soldiers, and both look better for it. Canvas straps are easy to change, so the best approach is to buy one watch you love and then add a few straps in different colours.
