A 26-year-old woman from Mumbai has become the centre of a viral social media discussion after sharing why she decided to quit her job following an alleged public confrontation with her boss over overtime pay.

Dhrupadi, who worked as a vocal coach at a music ed-tech company, said she spent more than two years teaching students and building a strong reputation within the organisation. But according to her, things changed after she asked to be compensated for work done beyond her scheduled hours.

“Low pay is one thing, disrespect is another”

In a video now circulating widely on Instagram, Dhrupadi alleged that instead of addressing the issue privately, her manager shouted at her in front of others at the workplace.

She later explained that while she was prepared to deal with low salaries, public humiliation was where she decided to draw the line.

The viral clip also features a man believed to be her boss saying that everyone in the company must follow his rules and that anyone unhappy with them was free to leave.

Following the incident, Dhrupadi resigned from the company. However, she said the decision was not made in the heat of the moment.

According to her, she first attempted to address the matter internally by raising concerns professionally and asking for accountability along with a formal apology.

“I raised concerns professionally and sought accountability and a formal apology. When that didn’t happen, I chose to resign,” she said.

Viral post sparks conversation online

Since posting about the incident, Dhrupadi’s story has struck a chord with many young professionals online, especially those who say they have experienced toxic workplace behaviour, unpaid overtime and poor communication at work.

She said the episode reflected a larger conversation about workplace dignity and how younger employees are becoming less willing to tolerate disrespect in professional spaces.

“This generation is not perfect. But we are becoming less willing to trade dignity for approval. And maybe that change was needed,” the 26-year-old wrote on Instagram.

Social media reacts

The post has received thousands of views and prompted strong reactions across social media platforms.

Many users praised her for standing up for herself and refusing to accept what they described as toxic work culture.

One user commented that unless stricter laws are introduced against unpaid overtime, talented professionals would continue leaving India for opportunities abroad.

Another wrote that they were proud she chose not to allow herself to be taken for granted any longer.

A third user remarked that she had not “resigned”, but had instead “promoted herself” out of a toxic workplace.
