A fresh global ranking has put India's street food culture back in the spotlight.

From quick bites grabbed between work to recipes that have been served for generations, street food remains one of the biggest highlights of travelling through India. The Time Out global ranking has now recognised Mumbai, Jaipur and New Delhi among the world's best cities for street food, with each destination earning a spot for its distinct local flavours.

Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City topped the list, followed by cities including Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Taipei, Mexico City, Manila, Hanoi, Johannesburg and Bangkok. Mumbai secured the 10th spot, Jaipur ranked 15th and New Delhi came in at 19th.

Mumbai's street food culture is built around convenience without compromising on flavour. The city's iconic vada pav continues to be its biggest draw, alongside favourites such as dabeli, bhajiya pav and Bombay toast. Its take on chaat is equally distinctive, with dishes like bhel puri, sev puri and ragda patties offering flavours that differ from those found in other parts of the country. Even its pani puri has a style and taste unique to the city.

New Delhi's streets are known for hearty North Indian classics. Chole bhature remains one of its most popular offerings, while soft dahi bhallas and crisp aloo tikkis continue to be staples at local food stalls. The city's stuffed parathas, served with butter, raita and chole, have also become synonymous with Delhi's food scene.

Jaipur brings a spicier touch to the list with snacks that showcase the flavours of Rajasthan. The city's pyaaz kachori, filled with slow-cooked onions, is among its best-known street food dishes, while kadhi kachori and mirchi vada are equally popular. Jaipur's version of pani puri, known locally as pani patasi, is another favourite, featuring crisp puris filled with spiced potatoes and served with a punchy mint and coriander-flavoured water.

The full top 20 also includes Marrakesh, Los Angeles, Beijing, Singapore, Guadalajara, Nairobi, Bucharest and Accra, alongside the three Indian cities.

It's another reminder that some of India's best meals are still found on its streets.
