Breakfast is the mood boost you’ve been skipping

You know the drill. The alarm goes off, you snooze it twice, and suddenly you’re out the door with a half-charged phone and a vague promise to ‘grab something later.’ Later turns out to be a 4 p.m. biscuit eaten over your keyboard. Sound familiar?
Science would like a word. The Furukawa Nutrition and Health Study, published in the journal Psychiatry Research, looked at 716 Japanese employees. Those who ate breakfast less than once a week had a higher risk of depressive symptoms than those who ate it every day.
To be clear, this is an association, not a verdict. Skipping a meal won’t automatically push you into a low mood, and plenty of things shape how we feel. But it’s a good reason to stop treating breakfast as the most skippable meal of the day.

There’s another side to it, too. Beyond the nutrition, breakfast can be a small personal ritual that sets the tone for everything that follows. Done right, it’s a few minutes of mindfulness and grounding before the day starts asking things of you.
Here’s how to make it feel sacred, ritualistic and, yes, enjoyable.
1. Prep the night before
Morning-you is groggy and not at your most inspired, so be kind to her (or him). Before bed, set out your favourite mugs and plates, wipe down the counters and check that you have everything you need.
When the kitchen is ready and waiting, breakfast starts feeling like an invitation.
2. Use dishware you actually like
That chipped mug from a long-forgotten office party? Retire it. Invest in a pretty bowl, plate or cup that simply feels good in your hands. It sounds small, but eating from something you love makes the whole meal feel more intentional.
3. Put your phone away (yes, really)
Leave it in the other room. Instead of scrolling, let your senses do the work. Listen for the kettle coming to the boil, catch the smell of eggs or toast or cinnamon, and feel the warmth of the mug in your hands. Ten phone-free minutes can do more for your mood than whatever the feed was about to show you.
4. Pick a fun drink to go with it
Your meal deserves a co-star. Iced coffee, a frothy matcha, a fragrant tea or a glass of fresh orange juice can all do the job. Choose whatever gives a little more of a will to live that morning. A drink you look forward to is often the thing that gets you out of bed in the first place.
5. Embellish wherever you can
Go a little extra. Heart-shaped ice cubes, a scatter of sprinkles, star-shaped butter, strawberries sliced into a flower on top of your pancakes, these small flourishes turn an ordinary plate into something special. Nobody is grading you on this, so play with your food a little.

You don’t need an elaborate spread or a 6 a.m. wellness routine. You need ten calm minutes, something you enjoy eating and a reason to look forward to the morning.
If the research is right, those minutes may be doing more for your head than you think.
So tomorrow, skip the snooze button, not the breakfast. Your future 4 p.m. self will thank you.
