Onam as seen through Indian celebrities, Bookmark for the next kasavu or pookalam season

This Onam, Malayalam cinema's favourite faces traded film sets for family verandahs, swapping premiere looks for pattu pudavas, oxidised jhumkas and gajra buns. From veteran icons to the internet's newest darlings, here's every look worth saving for reference because kasavu season always comes back around.

Nayanthara

Lady Superstar of Indian cinema, leaned into quiet luxury look with an ivory silk-linen saree from Neela by Anu Vardhan, cut clean with a micro-gold zari border. A sleeveless high-neck blouse, a multi-layered gold choker and a jasmine-laced braided bun gave the classic silhouette a contemporary edit.

Prithviraj Sukumaran & Supriya Menon

Prithviraj and Supriya kept it homely on their staircase, dog in tow as an unplanned photobomber.

Supriya wore a classic checked saree while Prithviraj paired a brown shirt with a kasavu mundu, proving Onam style doesn't always need to try hard.

Kunchacko Boban

Kunchacko skipped the expected kasavu altogether, posting from his festively-decorated home in an all-white kurta and pants with brown footwear. A moment with his wife and kid, styled with zero fuss.

Manju Warrier

Manju kept her Onam bright and breezy in a yellow saree with a floral blouse, a gift from a friend, fittingly worn in the season of bloom. She let the outfit do the work, styling it simply with open hair, a bindi and a long thread necklace.

Samvritha Sunil

Samvritha celebrated Onam this season, away from her hometown, in a sage green minimal onam saree with a red bindi and a statement earring.

Nazriya Nazim & Srinda

The Trance co-stars celebrated together in monochrome, a simple white-and-black onam saree, oxidised jewellery and jasmine in the hair.

Nazriya was earlier seen at a separate gathering in a tank top layered under a kasavu saree, hair in a low bun, with green bangles breaking up the neutral palette.

Poornima Indrajith & Indrajith Sukumaran

Poornima, actress and designer behind label Praanah was first seen in an all-white-and-gold kasavu saree with a kundan necklace, before switching things up on Thiruvonam day in a saree-and-shirt set from her own line, Keralam hand-painted green motif that read like a love letter to the state.

Malaika Arora

Proving Onam style travels beyond Kerala, Malaika stepped out in a white kurti-and-skirt co-ord by Faabiiana India, styled by Karishmaa. The dupatta stole the show with its red pop detailing, finished off with rose gold mule heels and a structured bag.

Mamitha Baiju

The girl-next-door look came easy to Mamitha in a check kasavu saree with a green kuppi valla and a red bindi, hair left open and wet. Classic enough to earn its own Mohanlal-dialogue caption from ‘Aaram Thampuran.’

Anupama Parameswaran

Anupama moved slightly off-script with a black brocade sleeveless blouse against a kasavu saree finished in floral detailing, hair left tied back and neat, departure from the usual all-white palette.

Bhavana

Bhavana's dhavani kept the kasavu identity but added a colourful border and delicate gold handwork on the blouse. She let the outfit lead, styling it down with layered gold jewellery and multicoloured glass bangles.

Anna Ben

Actress known for ‘Helen’ and ‘Kumbalangi Nights’ kept her Onam look light and playful with a striped fabric and a lavender floral blouse, proof the festival's dress code has room for a little whimsy.

Priya Prakash Varrier

Priya, who shot to fame with ‘Oru Adaar Love’ wore a red-and-white check blouse paired with a set mundu. Threading in the season's biggest trends- a mixed kuppi-wala border and an illaka thaali choker.

Krithi Shetty

Krithi went maximalist in the best way, a corset saree layered with temple jewellery, looking every bit like a devi pulled straight out of a mural painting.

Namitha Pramod

Posing outside her own café, Namitha wore a pink-and-purple striped onam saree with an ear-cuff jhumka and peach kuppi vallas. Her hair was pulled into a sleek bun decorated with arali flowers.

Gauthami Nair

Lekshmi from Diamond Necklace, went bold in purple kasavu, keeping the rest of the look effortless with oxidised earrings and a matching bindi.

Navya Nair

Breaking from the sea of sarees, Navya chose a themed salwar instead, finished with jasmine in her hair, a gold necklace, a watch and a single bangle for contrast.

Nyla Usha

Nyla known for ‘Punyalan Agarbathis’, wore a set mundu in kasavu, green and red, maximalist in colour but minimal in silhouette paired with a compact gold jhumka.

Gouri G Kishan

The ‘96’ movie fame actress, Gouri brought contrast into the frame with a pink onam look, a pearl-detailed cuff running up to her hair, which was half-tied with jasmine, and a matching necklace to close the look.

Shruti Ramachandran

Shruti as seen in ‘Madhuram,’ let her long hair do most of the talking, styled loose alongside a ghungroo-detailed gold necklace and matching bangles with a foil kasavu saree. 

Niranjana Anoop

Niranjana wore a half saree with rani pink detailing, finishing the look with a lotus bud tucked into her hair.

Grace Antony

Actress known for ‘Kumbalangi Nights’ posed with her husband in a classic check saree, hair loosely braided and adorned with jasmine, with green ornaments rounding out the look for their first Onam together.

Pearle Maaney & Srinish Aravind

Pearle, television host known for Bigg Boss Malayalam, marking her ninth Onam with her husband, brought red into the frame with kasavu.

Shamna Kassim

Shamna moved away from the traditional route entirely, opting for a kaftan detailed with pink leaf prints.
