The famous Windows XP desktop background 'Bliss' has left fans disappointed, after recent images revealed the once-green Napa Valley field is now covered in vineyards.

What the world’s most viewed photo looks like now: ‘It’s ruined’, say fans

The iconic Windows XP desktop wallpaper known as ‘Bliss’, taken in 1998 by photographer Charles ‘Chuck’ O’Rear, has resurfaced in online conversations—this time for a reason that's disappointing fans around the world.

Originally showing a pristine stretch of lush, green hills under a bright blue California sky, the photo has often been described as the most viewed image in history. However, recent images from 2006 to 2025 shared by Instagram account @insidehistory reveal that the landscape near Napa Valley has dramatically changed. The once-empty hills have been replaced with grapevines, returning the area to its original role as vineyard land.

Social media reactions have ranged from nostalgic to devastated. "I used to stare at this and wish I was there… it’s sad now," one user wrote. Another called it bluntly, "This is what depression looks like."

Some even joked darkly, suggesting that in “10 more years it’ll be a parking lot.” Another comment summed up the mood: “The spark the world used to have is gone.”

But others offered a more grounded view, pointing out seasonal changes may explain the difference. One user clarified that the original green field only existed briefly due to a phylloxera insect infestation that had cleared the vineyard at the time the photo was taken. “Every picture after 2006 is just the same grapevines,” a commenter said, “just in different seasons.”

The photographer himself, Chuck O’Rear, has confirmed in past interviews that the photo—titled Bucolic Green Hills—was not digitally enhanced. He captured it using a medium-format camera while driving near the Napa-Sonoma County line. It was later sold to Bill Gates’ Corbis Images and selected for Microsoft XP’s $200 million launch campaign in 2001. Although the price paid was never disclosed, O’Rear said it was an “acceptable amount.”

Despite its changed appearance, some users have defended the site's current form: “I’ve been there. It’s still just as beautiful. Breathtaking really.”

While the hills may have lost their iconic green hue, the memory of ‘Bliss’ remains vivid for millions who booted up a Windows XP PC in the early 2000s.
