From busy airports to long hours in the air, travelling with children can be challenging. Riyadh Air is hoping to make those journeys a little easier, happier and more memorable

For many parents, a long-haul flight begins long before the aircraft takes off. There are bags to pack, favourite toys to remember, snacks to carry and, perhaps most importantly, a plan to keep children comfortable and entertained for several hours.

Once inside the aircraft, the real challenge can begin. A child who was excited about the holiday may become restless after a few hours. Parents may find themselves searching through hand baggage for colouring books, games or something familiar that can keep little hands busy.

Riyadh Air, Saudi Arabia's new national carrier, is taking a different approach to this familiar travel challenge. The airline has partnered with The Walt Disney Company to bring Disney-themed experiences to its youngest passengers, turning part of the journey itself into something children can look forward to.

A little Disney at 35,000 feet

The partnership will see children aged 0 to 11 years travelling on Riyadh Air receive specially designed Mickey and Friends-themed amenity kits. The kits have been created for different age groups, recognising that a two-year-old and a ten-year-old may have very different ideas about what makes a flight enjoyable.

The initiative is particularly aimed at making long journeys more comfortable and engaging for families. Instead of parents having to carry every possible form of entertainment from home, children will have something of their own to explore once they settle into their seats.

For Riyadh Air, it is also part of a wider effort to make the passenger experience feel more personal and thoughtful.

Osamah AlNuaiser, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Communications at Riyadh Air, said the airline wants to create experiences that reflect its hospitality while bringing joy to travellers of all ages.

Something special for the smallest travellers

For babies between zero and two years, the experience begins with a practical infant kit. It includes a splashproof insulated bag for bottles and baby essentials, a soft bib, sensory flashcards, wet wipes and a cuddly Mickey Mouse plush toy.

For parents travelling with infants, small practical touches like these can make a difference. A familiar soft toy can provide comfort in an unfamiliar environment, while a useful bag can help keep baby essentials organised.

It may not solve every challenge of travelling with a baby, but it can make the journey feel a little more manageable.

For little explorers

Children between three and six years get kits designed around play and discovery. On shorter flights, the kit includes an art scroll, pencils and puzzles. On longer journeys, children receive a plush backpack, a magnetic puzzle tin, a pop-up colouring scene and a Disney bag tag.

For a young child, a new backpack or colourful activity can be enough to create excitement. And when the flight still has several hours to go, having something new to draw, colour or play with can provide a welcome distraction. More importantly, it gives children something they can call their own during the journey.

Growing up, but still ready to play

Older children between seven and 11 years are offered kits designed to give them a little more independence. The short-haul kit includes an art scroll, coloured pencils and a tabletop game. On long-haul flights, children receive a crossbody bag with a clip-on earphone holder, a 'Spin & Play' game spinner, a notepad, mini gel pen and Disney charms.

The idea is simple: give children something that feels fun without making them feel too young. For parents, it can also mean a few precious moments of quiet during a long journey.

Journey continues on screen

The Disney experience does not end with the amenity kits. Passengers travelling on Riyadh Air will also have access to movies, series and Disney+ Originals through the airline's in-flight entertainment system.

The content will include stories from Disney, Pixar, Marvel and National Geographic, along with general entertainment from Hulu. That gives families another option when children have finished with their activity kits and are ready to settle down with a movie or series.

For a family on a long-haul flight, having entertainment options can make those hours in the air feel considerably shorter.

Mealtimes get a Disney touch

Riyadh Air has also brought the Disney theme into children's meal service. Children's meals will be served with colourful Disney character tray liners featuring a non-slip coating. The airline will also provide cutlery sized for smaller hands.

These may seem like small details, but family travel is often made easier by precisely these little things. A child-friendly meal tray can turn an otherwise ordinary part of the flight into something exciting.

And for parents, a child who is happily occupied with a meal, game or movie is always a welcome sight.

Making family travel less stressful

Travelling with children will probably never be completely stress-free. There will still be the last-minute bathroom visit before boarding, the forgotten toy, the spilled drink and the inevitable question: “Are we there yet?” But airlines can make the experience easier.

By creating age-specific experiences for children, Riyadh Air is recognising something that is sometimes overlooked in air travel: children are passengers too. Their comfort can have a direct impact on the experience of the entire family. When children are engaged and comfortable, parents can relax a little more. And when parents are less stressed, the journey becomes more enjoyable for everyone around them.

Creating memories

Perhaps the nicest part of the initiative is that it changes the way children may remember the journey. For many adults, flying is simply a means of getting somewhere. For a child, however, the flight itself can become part of the holiday story.

A Mickey Mouse toy received on the aircraft, a colourful bag carried through an airport, a movie watched high above the clouds or a small Disney charm brought home can become a memory long after the aircraft has landed.

That is where Riyadh Air's partnership with Disney goes beyond entertainment. The airline is trying to make the journey itself part of the experience, particularly for families who may be spending many hours travelling together.

Towards happier skies

Riyadh Air has positioned the initiative as part of its broader focus on hospitality and attention to detail, in line with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 ambitions. But for an ordinary family boarding a long-haul flight, the bigger idea is much simpler.

A long journey with children can be tiring. A little comfort, something familiar, a new game and a favourite Disney character can make those hours feel a little lighter.

And sometimes, when you are travelling with children, a little bit of magic is exactly what the journey needs.
