17 injured as Air India flight drops: Are you safe in the skies?

A routine international flight turned into a frightening experience for passengers when an Air India Airbus A320neo suddenly lost altitude while cruising between Phuket and Delhi. Although the aircraft landed safely, the incident left 17 people injured and has once again brought aviation safety into sharp focus.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched a formal investigation into the incident, while the Ministry of Civil Aviation has secured the aircraft's Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) to determine exactly what happened during the flight.

Air India flight AI2379 departed Phuket, Thailand, for Delhi carrying 137 passengers and eight crew members. During the cruise phase of the flight, the Airbus A320neo experienced what the airline described as a sudden loss of altitude.
While the aircraft remained under control and eventually landed safely at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport at around 5:37 a.m. GMT, the unexpected movement inside the cabin caused injuries to passengers and crew members.
According to Air India, 13 passengers and four crew members were injured during the incident. All those who required medical attention were taken to hospital, and the airline later confirmed that everyone is in stable condition.
Following the landing, the aircraft was moved to a maintenance hangar where investigators secured both the Flight Data Recorder and Cockpit Voice Recorder for detailed analysis.
Investigation begins
The DGCA has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the occurrence. The Ministry of Civil Aviation said it is closely monitoring the probe, while Air India has informed the regulator and is cooperating fully with the investigation.
Aircraft manufacturer Airbus has also acknowledged the incident and stated that it is in contact with Air India to provide technical support whenever required.
The investigation will analyse data from the aircraft's flight recorders, maintenance history, weather information, communication between the pilots and air traffic control, and cockpit procedures followed during the flight.
