H1N1 cases surge in Kerala, Health dept issues guidelines in Wayanad

Kalpetta: The Kerala Health Department issued a warning for Wayanad district following H1N1 cases reported in various parts of the state. The new guidelines were announced in view of the increasing H1N1 flu cases recorded in Wayanad in recent years.
H1N1 flu, also known as swine flu, is caused by the virus in Influenza A group. It is a flu virus strain that can spread mainly from pigs to humans through air. Hence, those who have close interactions with pigs are more exposed to the flu.
Symptoms
The major symptoms are fever, body pain, dry cough, diarrhoea and fatigue. Though the fever will be relieved within 4 to 5 days, the flu may turn severe in certain cases. Therefore, diagnosing and seeking medical aid is crucial in the case of H1N1 flu. In severe cases, the disease may lead to infection in brain or lungs along with intensifying symptoms.
While sneezing and coughing, the virus can spread to at least one metre from the patient, which can spread the disease to others also.
The department of health has advised caution in the case of children below 5 years of age, people above 65 years, pregnant women, people with less immunity or those who have comorbidity.
