Rise in fish consumption among Malayalees, reveals study

According to a study conducted by the national fisheries department on the consumption of fish, the average fish consumption per malayalee is seen to have increased, and in 2022–23, it is estimated to be 20.65 kg. This is higher than the consumption of fish in the previous two years.
The average per capita consumption of fish in 2021–22 was 19.53 kg, and in 2020–21 it was 18.49 kg. Tripura is the state with the highest consumption of fish in India.
Mackerel (Ayala), sardines (mathi), anchovy (natholi) and pink perch (kilimeen) are the common fish consumed by Malayalees. Measures are being taken by the government to deliver fish to the required people. The sale of fish, which was earlier confined to the markets, is now done on the streets and on roadsides.
The number of people visiting hotels that serve seafood and restaurants by Matsyafed has also increased recently.
