Thiruvananthapuram: State government has decided to procure paddy directly from farmers through cooperative societies.

Paddy will be procured in Palakkad, Alappuzha, Thrissur and Kottayam districts. The decision was taken at the meeting convened by minister Kadakampally Surendran.

Paddy will be procured at a rate of Rs 28.05 per kilogram. Currently, private agencies collect paddy from farmers at the rate of Rs 14 per kg.

It has also been decided that the money will be paid to the farmers when the paddy is procured. The collection will be done by 100 cooperative societies. The plan is to convert the paddy into rice and sell it via cooperative societies.
