Kerala to implement Centre's decision to ban 27 pesticides

Kottayam: Kerala will support the central government's move to ban 27 more pesticides. The Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare had sent the list of banned pesticides to the states and also invited suggestions. The pesticides are harmful for both humans and animals.

Direct selling and experimenting with pesticides has been banned in Kerala. There were complaints that many chemical companies directly invite farmers to sell pesticides. Following this, the ban was imposed.

The banned pesticides

1. Acephate

Affects various glands in the body. Used in paddy and cotton. Harmful for honeybees.

2. Atrazine

Affects glands. Banned by 37 countries. Harmful for fish.

3. Benfuracarb

Carcinogenic pesticide. Affects groundwater. Banned by 28 countries.

4. Butachlor

Harmful for aquatic animals. Banned by 31 countries.

5. Captan

Banned 6 countries. Harmful for aquatic animals.

6. Carbendazim

Affects reproductive organs of women. Banned by 29 countries.

7. Carbofuran

Highly toxic. Harmful for birds and aquatic animals. Banned in 63 countries.

8. Chlorpyrifos

Affects brain. Banned by 31 countries.

9. 2,4-D

Carcinogenic. Banned in 3 countries.

10. Deltamethrin

Harmful for honeybees. Affects human glands.

11. Dicofol

Banned in 45 countries. Harmful for fish. Pollutes water.

12. Dimethoate

Banned in 31 countries. Causes genetic issues.

13. Dinocap

Banned in 28 countries. Harmful for fish.

14. Diuron

Pollutes water. Harmful for fish. Banned in one country.

15. Malathion

Used in paddy for many years. Harmful for environment. Banned in two countries.

16. Mancozeb

Harmful for humans and aquatic animals. Banned in one country.

17. Methimyl

Highly toxic. Harmful for birds, worms and aquatic animals. Banned in 41 countries.

18. Monocrotophos

Highly toxic. Harmful for birds, honeybee and fish. Banned in 112 countries.

19. Oxyfluorfen

Affects liver. Banned in two countries. Pollutes water.

20. Pendimethalin

Affects thyroid. Harmful for aquatic animals.

21. Quninalphos

Harmful for humans and aquatic animals. Banned in 30 countries.

22. Sulfosulfuron

Insects develops resistance power against this.

23. Thiodicarb

Highly toxic. Harmful for honeybees and aquatic animals.

24. Thiophante methyl

Destroys earthworms.

25. Thiram

Harmful for aquatic animals.

26. Zineb

Harmful for aquatic animals. Banned in 32 countries.

27. Ziram

Harmful for aquatic animals.
