UAE school admission age rules change from 2026: What parents need to know

UAE: The UAE will implement a new age cut-off date for school and kindergarten admissions starting with the 2026–27 academic year, allowing greater flexibility for early years enrolment.
Under the revised policy, children will be eligible to join Pre-Kindergarten or Foundation Stage 1 (FS1) at age two, provided they turn three by December 31 of the admission year. This change benefits children born in September, October, November and December, who previously had to wait an additional year to start school.
What is changing?
From August 2026, the official school age cut-off will shift from August 31 to December 31 of the admission year. This means children can begin school if they reach the required age by the end of December, rather than before the end of August.
The decision, approved by the UAE Education, Human Development and Community Development Council, aims to ensure fairer access to early education and align the UAE’s admissions framework with international education systems.
Who does the new rule apply to?
The updated age criteria apply to new admissions only across all emirates for schools that begin their academic year in August or September, including British, IB, American, Indian, French and other international curricula.
The policy covers entry levels from:
- Pre-KG / FS1
- KG / FS2
- Up to Grade 1 (Year 2 – UK curriculum)
It affects children aged two to six at the start of the school year. Existing students will not be impacted.
Schools that start their academic year in April, including many Indian curriculum schools, will continue to follow a March 31 cut-off date.
Age requirements from August 2026
Under the new UAE school admissions policy:
- FS1 / Pre-KG: 3 years old by December 31
- FS2 / KG1: 4 years old by December 31
- Year 1 / KG2: 5 years old by December 31
- Year 2 / Grade 1: 6 years old by December 31
Final placement may vary depending on individual school policies.
Parents will no longer need to delay school entry for children with late-year birthdays. A child turning three between September and December can now start FS1 or Pre-KG in the same academic year.
While compulsory education in the UAE begins at age six, early schooling from age three remains common and optional, based on parental preference.
Schools are expected to update their admissions guidelines ahead of the 2026–27 intake. Parents are advised to check directly with schools for entry criteria, assessments and seat availability, as implementation may vary by institution.
