Surge in IELTS applicants; more than 2 lakh candidates undergoing training in Kerala

Kochi: There has been a significant surge in applicants in Kerala for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam, which facilitates study and immigration to foreign countries. This year, more than two lakh students are receiving training for the exam. It is estimated that candidates are spending more than Rs 100 crore on training centres this year alone.

This increase marks a substantial rise from the approximately 500 applicants per year in the early 2000s. Registration figures at the training centres indicate that a large number of applicants are entering this field following the Covid-19 pandemic.

Presently, there are around 5000 IELTS training centres in Kerala, a stark increase from the 500 centres before the onset of the pandemic. The majority of candidates are seeking training in the districts of Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram. In addition to Kochi, Kozhikode, and Thiruvananthapuram, examination centres are also established in Kottayam and Thrissur.

While previously only English-speaking countries such as the UK, Canada, USA, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand required an IELTS score, countries like Germany, France, and Switzerland are now also demanding the same, notes foreign education consultant Dr S Raj.

IELTS assesses the applicant’s proficiency in the English language, with the British Council being the main organiser of the test. Proficiency in the four basic communication skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing (LSRW)—is evaluated. A score of 6-6.5 is typically required, with the validity of a one-time score lasting for a period of two years.
