Shortage of Plus One batches in Malabar: HC seeks explanation from state government

Kochi: Kerala High Court has sought an explanation from the state government in connection with the plea seeking additional Plus One batches in the Malabar region.
The court’s intervention comes in the wake of the plea submitted by two SSLC full A-Plus holders and MSF state president PK Navaz.
The order is of Justice PV Kunhikrishnan. The court has also sought a response from the member secretary of Prof V Karthikeyan committee constituted to study the restructuring of higher secondary batches.
Both parties are entitled to submit responses in within two weeks.
According to the petition, there is a shortage of Plus One batches in Malabar. There is a shortage of 29,577 higher secondary seats in Malappuram. 77,827 students cleared SSLC in the district. However, the availability of higher secondary seats is 48, 250. Similarly, there is shortage of seats in Palakkad(9271), Wayanad(1786), Kozhikode(7223), Kannur(4714) and Kassaragod(3481).
Meanwhile, the Karthikeyan committee was constituted to solve the higher secondary admission crisis. The government has neither published the report nor implemented its recommendations, the plea noted.
