NIT Calicut imposes heavy fines on protestors amid 'Night Curfew' controversy

Kozhikode: In a controversial development, authorities at NIT (National Institute of Technology) Calicut have purportedly taken stringent measures against students participating in a protest concerning the 'Night Curfew' on campus. Reportedly, the authorities have levied a substantial fine of Rs 33 lakhs on five protesting students. The Registrar has issued an order detailing the penalties, with each student now required to pay Rs 6,61,155.

The protest, initiated by students on March 22, commenced at 7:30 a.m., preventing officials and faculty from entering the institution that day. Authorities justify the imposed penalties by asserting that they reflect the losses incurred by the institution due to the closure on that day.

The 'Night Curfew,' introduced by the Dean, faced severe criticism as it restricted students' movements on and off campus after 11 p.m. The revised regulations aim to bolster the curfew and instill greater discipline among hostel residents.

The dean's order included a restriction on hostel timing to address students engaging in negative habits such as drinking and smoking. Those staying at hostels should reach their rooms before 11 p.m. The college canteen that was functional until late at night will also be closed after 11 p.m. from Wednesday onwards.

Those failing to follow the rules will face repercussions, including suspension. The order also places importance on students' diet and overall health.

Another reason that was considered was that sleeping late at night affects the students' mental health and their studies. It was noted that if sleep patterns are consistently disrupted, students of this age may be at risk for heart disease and diabetes. The dean claimed that the new rules do not in any way take away the freedom of the students.
