Major features of Kerala’s four-year degree programmes

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is aiming to bring about international standards with reforms to its higher education system. As the classes for the four-year courses commenced on Monday (July 1), let us take a look at the major features of the program implemented in Kerala.

Major Differences in Degree Programmes and Credit Systems

Three types of degrees are offered:

  • Three-year standard degree
  • Four-year Honours degree
  • Four-year Honours with Research degree

Semester and credit-based learning system:

  • Three-year degree: 133 credits
  • Four-year honours: 177 credits

Students can transfer their credits across institutions, allowing them to change their college or university.

Enhanced Course Structure and Evaluation System

The course structure will feature major and minor specialisations, offering students the flexibility to select subjects across disciplines and switch courses if desired.

Vocational training will be integrated, providing students with opportunities for internships and industry projects.

Examinations will follow a 70:30 ratio for external & internal assessment. Evaluations will take place in colleges during the first, third, fifth, and seventh semesters. Additionally, open book exams will be conducted.
