Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Technical University (KTU) is planning to make computer and humanities subjects compulsory in all branches of the course. The new subjects have been included in the new curriculum which is set to be implemented this year.

Academicians have a mixed reaction to this change as some feel that this will de-emphasise core engineering and core subjects. Others claim that the new curriculum has been prepared keeping in mind the job opportunities in the field. Some say that reducing the number of core subjects and reducing the importance of mathematics would drain away the essence of mathematics.

Earlier, 4-5 core subjects were  to be studied in each semester. KTU is following along the lines of empirical learning and applied knowledge that is popular on a global basis. As per the new curriculum, students will be able to use the final two semesters completely for internship. The teaching hours of mathematics has been reduced because theory classes taught in the seventh and eighth semesters had to be revised.

This reform completely eliminates the tutorial hours of mathematics. The number of credits in Mathematics for engineering degree has been reduced to 12 from 16. This has also affected teachers as the reduction in number of periods will result in the reduction of teaching posts.
Many raise concerns whether these reforms will affect the technical knowledge of students.
