Civil service training for workers’ children

Thiruvananthapuram: The government is providing an opportunity for workers’ children to take a chance at Civil Services. The IAS Academy under the Kerala Institute of Labour and Employment of the Labor Department has invited applications for the fourth consecutive year. Classes will begin in the first week of June.
Almost 300 students have received training in the last three years. Classes at the academy are conducted by proficient trainers and those who have cleared the UPSC prelims and mains. Sunil Thomas, the executive director at the institute, said that the academy has the best faculty in the field. All the classes, libraries, and reading rooms are equipped with modern technologies. Each student at the institute is given one-on-one attention with test series, rating sessions, and mentoring.
Only Rs 20,000 is the fee for the children of those registered with the Labor Welfare Boards. Rs 25,000 will be collected from the children of other workers. Those belonging to general categories have to pay a fee of Rs 50,000. There are 20 seats reserved for these categories. The rest of the seats are reserved for the children of workers.
An entrance exam, to select deserving students, will be conducted if there are more than 100 applicants. Classes will be held from 9 am to 5 pm. Opportunities to conduct one-on-one sessions with experts will also be arranged. Authorities have informed that all the classes are arranged such that it will give quality sessions to students in the wake of tight competition in civil services.
