New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced amendments to Chapter 4 (Physical Infrastructure) of its Affiliation Bye-Laws, 2018, aimed at reinforcing safety measures across all affiliated schools.

CCTV surveillance now mandatory in key areas

As per news reports, in accordance with Clause 1(X) of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR)'s Manual on Safety and Security of Children in Schools, which states, "CCTV in schools needs to be monitored and maintained regularly," the CBSE has made CCTV installation a compulsory requirement.

Schools must now ensure the installation of high-resolution CCTV cameras with real-time audio-visual recording in the following key locations:

  • All entry and exit points
  • Lobbies and corridors
  • Staircases, classrooms, laboratories, and library
  • Canteen, store rooms, playground, and other common areas

The directive specifically notes that toilets and washrooms are excluded from this requirement.

15-day footage backup required

Each CCTV system must be equipped with a storage device capable of preserving footage for a minimum of 15 days. In addition, a mandatory backup for the same period must be maintained, and should be made accessible to authorities when required.

Strict compliance expected

The CBSE has emphasised that all affiliated schools must strictly comply with these provisions in order to safeguard students. The revised guidelines are part of a larger effort to ensure that schools are not only places of learning, but also safe and secure environments for children.
