University of Mumbai - Department of Atomic Energy Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences (UM-DAE CEBS), Nalanda bldg., University of Mumbai, Kalina Campus, Vidyanagari, Santacruz (East), Mumbai - 400 098; an aided institute of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Govt. of India, has invited applications for admission to the Ph.D. Programme at UM-DAE CEBS for the Academic Year 2025-26.

UM-DAE CEBS has invited applications for full-time Ph.D. programme in various schools.

The schools and eligibility are as follows: (i) School of Physical Sciences – M.Sc. in Physics (background in Nuclear Physics, Mathematical Physics, Plasma Physics, Condensed Matter Physics or Computational Physics is desirable) (ii) School of Chemical Sciences – M.Sc. in Chemistry (General, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Biochemistry or Material Chemistry is desirable) (iii) School of Mathematical Sciences – M.Sc. in Mathematics (background in Algebra, Topology and Analysis is desirable) (iv) School of Biological Sciences – M.Sc. in Biology (Life Sciences, Microbiology, Botany, Zoology, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry and Biophysics is desirable)

Essential Requirements: (i) M.Sc. in the relevant subject area with at least 55% marks in aggregate (50% for SC, ST and Divyangjan categories)/equivalent grade ‘B’ on the UGC 7-point scale/equivalent grade in the point scale, wherever the grading system has been followed/equivalent degree from a foreign educational institution (ii) Age: a maximum of 28 years as of August 1, 2025. Age limit will be relaxed by 3 years for the OBC-NCL candidates, by 5 years for SC/ST candidates, and by 10 years for Divyangjan candidates (iii) Qualification in UGC-CSIR-NET (JRF or LS) / SLET / GATE / NBHM / JEST / DBT-BET / DST INSPIRE or PET conducted by the University of Mumbai / Teachers’ Fellowship examinations.

Selected candidates will be eligible for a DAE Fellowship or may activate their own fellowship from DBT, DST (INSPIRE), UGC/CSIR/NBHM, etc.

Fellowships: Those joining the Ph.D. programme will receive a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) instituted by UM-DAE CEBS, or alternatively, they can activate their own fellowship (from DBT, DST, etc.). The CEBS fellowship has emoluments of Rs. 37,000/- per month and HRA @30% as applicable for the first two years and upgradation to Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) from the third year onwards with a stipend of Rs. 42,000/- per month plus HRA @30% as applicable, subject to terms and conditions laid down by DAE from time to time. Selected candidates are also entitled to a contingency grant of Rs. 60,000/- per year.

Reservation Policy: UM-DAE CEBS follows the reservation policy of the Government of India.

Mode of selection: Selection will be made based on the merit list prepared after a written test and/or an interview conducted by each school of UM-DAE CEBS.

Duration: 5 years, including UGC-prescribed coursework as mandated from time to time.

Accommodation: A very limited shared accommodation (3 female and 3 male candidates) for the 1st year is available on the UM-DAE CEBS campus for candidates whose hometown lies outside the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, and it will be allotted strictly based on merit.

Degree: Candidates will be awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Basic Sciences (with specialisation in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics) by the University of Mumbai after successful completion of the programme.

Rules and Regulations: Candidates enrolled in the Ph.D. programme will be bound by the rules and regulations of the Ph.D. programme of UM-DAE CEBS.
