Research admissions in Data Science at IISER Pune

Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Pune, an Autonomous Institution of the Ministry of Education, Govt. of India; Dr. Homi Bhabha Road, Pune 411008; has invited applications from students with a good academic track record for admission to Research Programme (Ph.D) in Data Science Department, for the January 2026 session. 

Research areas in the Department include AI/ML in Healthcare; Climate modelling; Computational and Applied Mathematics; Computational Biology & Bioinformatics; Computational Chemistry; Computational Finance; Dynamical systems; Statistical methods in ML.

The Department works at the intersection of Statistics and Probability, Applied Mathematics and Computer Science. The PhD program is expected to train the student in all the three aspects of Data science: theory, methods, and applications. Candidate will also be part of a collaborative research network extending to other departments at IISER Pune, as well as national and international academic and industry partners.

Eligibility: Applicant should hold a Master’s degree or a four-year Bachelor’s Degree like BE, BTech, BS or equivalent in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science or any Science / Engineering subject with overall 60% marks in aggregate (55% for SC/ST/Specially abled candidates PD/VH) or an equivalent CGPA on a 10-point scale.

Applicant should also have at least one of the following: (i) Qualified a national eligibility exam such as CSIR-JRF, UGC-JRF, DBT-JRF-A, DBT-BINC-JRF, JEST, NBHM, GATE, JGEEBILS, etc with a score valid for January 2026 (ii) INSPIRE-PhD fellowship (should be in possession of provisional selection letter at the time of Interview) (iii) Four-year Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an Institution of National Importance (INI) with a minimum CGPA of 8.0, in possession of the degree from the INI- graduated by the time of the submission of the application.

Selection process: Based on applications received, the criteria listed and additional criteria set by the Department, applicants will be shortlisted for interviews. Shortlisted candidates will be selected for admission to the program through a rigorous evaluation process involving two rounds of interviews by a selection committee. Interview will be held online. Candidates will need a stable internet connection and ability to connect a zoom call with camera and microphone.
