Sony FX2 launched with 4K crop and tilting EVF, promising pro video and stills in one body

Sony has unveiled the new FX2, blending cinema-grade features with enhanced photography capabilities. Positioned between the FX3 and FX30, the FX2 is built for creators who want professional video features in a compact, stills-friendly body.
4K from a 7K sensor with S35 crop mode
The FX2 features a high-resolution 33MP sensor capable of capturing oversampled 4K video from 7K at up to 30fps. For higher frame rates, it supports 4K 60fps recording via a Super 35mm (APS-C) crop, a feature not available in the FX3 or FX6 due to their lower-resolution sensors. Full HD at 120fps is also included.
The camera supports 10-bit 4:2:2 internal recording with S-Log and S-Cinetone for both video and stills. For those seeking even more flexibility, there's 16-bit RAW output available through the HDMI Type A port.
Dual base ISO and wide dynamic range
The FX2’s back-illuminated sensor uses dual-gain architecture, offering base ISO levels of 800 and 4000 for S-Log shooting. Sony claims the camera can capture up to 15 stops of dynamic range, making it suitable for a wide variety of lighting conditions.
A rare feature: Tilting EVF
In a standout hardware addition, the FX2 includes a 3.68-million-dot tiltable electronic viewfinder—a rarity in hybrid cameras today. This design upgrade improves usability for creators filming in challenging angles or outdoor environments.
FX3 body with a7 IV sensor: A winning combo
Though the FX2 may seem like a repackaged a7 IV, its placement in the FX lineup is more than cosmetic. With the FX3 body, users get built-in active cooling for longer shooting times, professional audio options via the XLR handle, and enhanced ergonomics for run-and-gun filming.
Better stills support
While the FX2 is primarily a cinema camera, Sony has acknowledged the growing demand for hybrid use. The camera offers strong stills capabilities, leveraging the 33MP sensor for high-quality photos. Log shooting for stills is also available, making it easier to match the look and feel of video footage.
Designed for everyday creators
Not every filmmaker needs 4K at 120fps. The FX2 focuses on what most creators use daily—detailed 4K at standard frame rates, great color science, flexibility with lenses (thanks to S35 mode), and reliable performance. It’s built for the 99%, not just the spec chasers.
Pricing and availability
The Sony FX2 will be priced at $3,099.99 (approximately ₹2.58 lakh) with the XLR handle, and $2,699.99 (around ₹2.25 lakh) for the body-only version. Prices in India may vary depending on taxes, import duties and retailer markups.
Whether you're a content creator, documentarian, or wedding videographer, the FX2 could be the perfect tool for your workflow—delivering cinema-quality video and capable stills in one compact package.
