Did OnePlus merge with Realme? New developments raise concerns

Smartphone brand OnePlus is reportedly undergoing a major structural overhaul, with multiple media reports suggesting that it has been merged with Realme.
However, as of the publication of the article, OnePlus has yet to officially release any statement regarding the same.
According to reports, the move comes as OnePlus is said to be reviewing its international strategy, with earlier indications pointing to potential scaling down or even shutdown of operations in Europe. The company has already been facing reports of workforce reductions and strategic reassessments in key markets.
While the brand has previously maintained that business operations remain unchanged, uncertainty continues to grow.
OnePlus has officially said it is “evaluating” its future in Europe.
Adding to the speculation, industry leaks from Digital Chat Station on Weibo claim that “OnePlus and Realme have officially merged.” The report suggests that both brands will consolidate their global and domestic (China) operations under a new “sub-product centre.”
It further states that marketing and after-sales services for OnePlus and Realme will also be integrated, with the newly structured teams reportedly answering directly to Pete Lau (Liu Zuohu). Another report indicates that the merged entity will focus more heavily on “the reuse of product lines.”
OnePlus was founded in December 2013 by Pete Lau and Carl Pei with a focus on premium smartphones, debuting with the OnePlus One powered by Cyanogen OS. Over the years, the company expanded its lineup, including its entry into the mid-range segment with the OnePlus Nord in 2020.
Carl Pei, who played a key role in OnePlus’ design and marketing direction until his departure in October 2020, later went on to launch the consumer tech brand Nothing.
