Washington DC: Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has come under scrutiny in the United States after three Republican House committee chairs sought a closed-door briefing from him over his reported association with a Chinese businesswoman suspected of working as an intelligence asset for Beijing. The development has raised questions about Nvidia's business dealings with China, the movement of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) chips and the potential implications for US national security.

The controversy centres on Alice Huang, also identified as Huang Le, a Chinese national and senior executive at Singapore-based data centre firm Megaspeed. According to reports by The New York Times, US authorities suspected her of operating as a Chinese intelligence asset and transmitting information to Beijing. She also came under scrutiny over the alleged diversion of advanced Nvidia AI chips to China.

Surveillance of the businesswoman reportedly revealed that she maintained a close association with Jensen Huang, prompting questions about the nature of their interactions. However, the reported association does not by itself establish that the Nvidia chief was involved in any intelligence activity or wrongdoing.

Why have US lawmakers sought answers from Jensen Huang?

According to Axios, three Republican committee chairs in the US House of Representatives have asked Jensen Huang to address the reported links with the Chinese businesswoman in a closed-door briefing.

The lawmakers are seeking clarity over the nature of the association and whether it has any implications for US national security, particularly amid Washington's efforts to restrict China's access to advanced semiconductor technology.

The development comes at a time when Nvidia's advanced AI processors have become a major focus of the technology and geopolitical rivalry between the United States and China.

What is the controversy surrounding Nvidia chips and China?

Nvidia is one of the world's leading manufacturers of AI processors, which are essential for developing and operating advanced artificial intelligence systems. Its chips are also considered strategically important because of their potential applications in military technology, intelligence and advanced computing.

The US government has imposed export restrictions on advanced semiconductor technology to prevent China from accessing chips that could strengthen its military and technological capabilities.

Jensen Huang has repeatedly argued against overly restrictive export controls, maintaining that American technology companies should be allowed to compete in the Chinese market.

According to reports, Huang successfully lobbied the Trump administration during the president's second term to reverse stricter export restrictions governing Nvidia's chip shipments to China.

He also finalised a deal with Trump that allowed the US government to secure a 25 per cent stake in specific Nvidia processors authorised for sale to China.

What has Donald Trump said about Jensen Huang?

The controversy has also raised questions about Huang's position as an adviser on US technology policy.

US President Donald Trump expressed uncertainty about his confidence in the Nvidia chief amid the reported association with the Chinese businesswoman, according to The Washington Post.

Speaking to reporters at his annual Halloween party at Mar-a-Lago in Florida, Trump said he wanted to continue backing Huang but would wait for more information before reaching a conclusion.

"I would like to say yes. I mean, unless we find out something to the contrary," Trump said when asked whether he still had confidence in Huang as an adviser.

"I’ve always found Jensen Huang to be very aboveboard. But you know, you’re dealing in a very complex issue," he added.

Trump said he was unaware of the specific intelligence concerns but hoped Huang would be cleared of any suspicion.

"We hope everything’s okay with Jensen. We’ll check it out. We’re going to check it out very closely," he said.

Calling Huang a "great" and "brilliant" person, Trump added, "When it comes to chips, there’s never been anyone like him."

Why is Jensen Huang's China policy under scrutiny?

Huang has been among the prominent technology executives advocating continued access to the Chinese market for US semiconductor companies.

During Trump's second term, the Nvidia chief reportedly made several efforts to persuade the administration against imposing sweeping restrictions on chip exports to China.

As the administration considered a comprehensive ban on Nvidia chip exports to China, Huang and his spouse travelled to Mar-a-Lago to persuade Trump to allow American technology firms to continue doing business with Beijing.

His lobbying efforts have highlighted the competing interests facing Washington: protecting national security and limiting China's access to advanced technology while preserving the commercial interests of American semiconductor companies.

The latest allegations have added another layer to that debate, with US lawmakers seeking answers about the reported association between the Nvidia chief and a businesswoman suspected of having links to Chinese intelligence.
