What is ‘No Mercy’? The disturbing game that sparked global backlash

‘No Mercy’, a highly controversial and graphic video game, has been removed from the global digital game platform Steam after facing widespread criticism and bans in several countries. Developed by Zerat Games, the title sparked outrage for its extreme and disturbing content, leading to its removal from stores in Australia, Canada, and eventually worldwide.
The game places players in control of a male character who engages in acts of incest, rape, and sexual violence. Marketing materials for the game urged players to “never take no for an answer” and “become every woman’s worst nightmare.”
Initially launched on Steam in March, No Mercy was described by its own developers as containing violence, incest, blackmail, and “unavoidable non-consensual sex.” Shockingly, the game was accessible to users on Steam, a platform that allows anyone aged 13 and above to create an account, despite lacking an official age rating.
Screenshots and trailers from the game contained graphic and sexually explicit content, sparking alarm over how easily minors could access it.
The public backlash intensified after a report by LBC revealed that the game remained available for download in the UK, even as other countries had already taken action.
In response to mounting criticism, Zerat Games issued a lengthy statement on Steam on April 10, announcing their decision to voluntarily remove the game. However, they also used the opportunity to defend their creation, referring to the disturbing themes as “popular kinks” and calling for more open-mindedness around adult content.
“I fully understand that for many people such things may be disgusting, but during sex, people should really do what they want, as long as they don’t harm anyone,” the studio wrote.
“If after reading [our statement] you still believe that such a game should not have been created, then we sincerely apologize to you. At the same time, we would like you to be a bit more open to human fetishes that don’t harm anyone, even though they may seem disgusting to you. This is still just a game, and although many people are trying to make it into something more, it remains and will continue to be a game.”
