Nikon ZR debuts with 6K video, RED codec and world’s first 32-bit float audio

Nikon Corporation on Wednesday announced the launch of the ZR, the first full-frame sensor camera from its new Z CINEMA series, developed in collaboration with RED Digital Cinema.
The Nikon ZR is the smallest and lightest model in the series, weighing just 540 grams, yet packs high-end production capabilities aimed at filmmakers and content creators.
The camera introduces R3D NE, a new recording format based on RED’s R3D RAW codec and tailored for Nikon cameras, enabling precise color science and exposure standards consistent with RED systems. It supports dual base ISOs of 800 and 6400, over 15 stops of dynamic range, and internal 6K/59.94p recording.
Nikon also highlighted its audio innovation — the ZR is the world’s first camera to support 32-bit float audio recording with both built-in and external microphones. The built-in system leverages Nokia’s OZO Audio with five pickup patterns for studio-grade sound capture.
A large 4.0-inch monitor, compact body, and Nikon Z-mount’s 16mm short flange focal distance make the ZR highly versatile, supporting a wide range of lenses for cinema use.
Nikon said the synergy with RED marks a milestone in expanding cinematic imaging possibilities, promising filmmakers “a new dimension in optical performance” for professional and creative productions.
