Bitchat and Discord: Two unlikely apps that bypassed Nepal's social media ban to revive democracy

Kathmandu: As Nepal underwent one of its most intense youth-led protest movements in recent memory, two unexpected digital platforms, Discord and Bitchat, emerged as vital tools fueling the uprising and shaping the nation’s political future.
The protests erupted broadly after the Nepali government imposed a ban on widely used social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, aiming to curb unrest. In response, Nepal’s Gen Z protesters rapidly adapted by switching to alternative technologies that bypassed traditional internet controls.
Bitchat: The Offline Messaging Lifeline
Bitchat, an innovative Bluetooth-based messaging app created by Jack Dorsey, became a digital lifeline. Unlike conventional apps, Bitchat does not rely on an internet connection, mobile data, or SIM cards. Instead, it sends fully encrypted messages hopping device to device over Bluetooth within a 300-meter radius. This mesh networking capability allowed protesters to maintain communication despite government-imposed internet blackouts. Downloads of Bitchat surged from approximately 3,000 to nearly 49,000 in a matter of days, underscoring its crucial role on the ground.
Discord: The Virtual Parliamentary Forum
Meanwhile, Discord, a chat platform widely used by gaming communities, transformed into a virtual parliamentary forum. Tens of thousands of young Nepalis gathered on Discord servers to debate political strategies, discuss demands, and even conduct an informal vote to select an interim Prime Minister. One prominent server attracted over 145,000 participants engaged in fervent discussions, ultimately supporting former Chief Justice Sushila Karki for the role. Following these digital consultations, Karki was sworn in as Nepal’s interim PM, marking a historic first for the country.
TikTok Amplifies Protest Messaging
The protests were further amplified by TikTok with the hashtag #NepoKids, which highlighted disparities between the political elite and ordinary citizens, intensifying public anger. Despite the ban on many platforms, TikTok remained accessible and critical for spreading protest messages.
Sustaining Momentum Amid Crackdowns
The combination of Bitchat’s resilient offline communication and Discord’s expansive collaborative space enabled Nepal’s youth to sustain momentum amid government crackdowns and social media restrictions.
With at least 72 demonstrators losing their lives in the violent clashes, the uprising marked a major turning point in Nepal’s political history and demonstrated the power of decentralised communication tools in modern social movements.
Lifting of Restrictions and Lasting Impact
The government has since lifted bans on multiple social media platforms, reopening access to Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Discord, and others, but the lasting impact of these technologies on Nepal’s political landscape remains clear, ushering in a new era of digitally empowered democracy.
