Is Jio down in Kerala? Users report widespread mobile and broadband issues

# Tech Desk

Reliance Jio, one of India’s leading telecom providers, experienced a major service disruption on Monday afternoon, leaving thousands of users without mobile data, JioFiber broadband, or mobile network access. The outage, which began around 1:30 PM on June 16, affected Kerala users.

Mobile internet is most affected

According to data from Downdetector, a platform that tracks real-time service disruptions, 54% of complaints were related to mobile data issues. JioFiber accounted for 27% of the complaints, while 19% were about problems with mobile network signals. In Kerala, nearly 56% of users reported trouble with mobile data, 29% with mobile network reception, and 15% with fibre broadband.

Social media flooded with complaints

Users took to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to share their frustration. Many posted screenshots showing "No Service" messages and signal bars disappearing from their phones. A few speculated about a possible cyberattack, while most demanded an explanation from the company. Hashtags like #JioDown and tags to @JioCare are flooding social media.

Spike in outage reports raises concern

Downdetector observed a sharp increase in problem reports within less than an hour. From just 200 users reporting issues around 1:30 PM, the number surged to over 12,000 by 2:17 PM. The monitoring platform only flags an outage when user complaints cross a certain threshold above the normal range.

No official word from Reliance Jio

Despite the large scale of the disruption, Reliance Jio has not yet issued an official statement explaining the cause. While minor technical glitches have occurred in the past, the widespread nature of this incident points to a more serious backend issue or system failure.

Users advised to wait and try basic fixes

Until an official clarification is issued, experts recommend basic troubleshooting steps—such as restarting phones or toggling airplane mode—to reconnect to the network. However, given the volume of complaints, the fault appears to be on the service provider’s side.
