Why was GTA VI delayed again? Rockstar Games sets new 2026 release date

Rockstar Games has officially delayed the release of Grand Theft Auto VI to November 19, 2026, marking the second postponement for what is widely considered the most anticipated video game of the decade. The move comes as the studio aims to ensure the title meets the "high standards that fans have come to expect and deserve," according to the company’s statement. GTA VI was originally targeting a fall 2025 launch before being pushed to May 2026 and is now set for a late 2026 release, stretching the gap since Grand Theft Auto V’s 2013 debut to an unprecedented thirteen years.
Investor Reaction and Company Performance
The delay sent shockwaves through the financial world, with parent company Take-Two Interactive’s shares plunging up to 14% in after-hours trading before closing at a 6% loss. Despite this, the publisher reported record quarterly net bookings of $1.96 billion, buoyed by hits like NBA 2K26 and Borderlands 4. Notably, Grand Theft Auto V continues its dominance with over 220 million units sold to date, cementing the franchise's long-term commercial success.
Union Controversy and Layoffs
Rockstar’s announcement arrives in the midst of labour unrest. Roughly 30 to 40 UK and Canada-based employees were terminated in late October, a move the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain claims was a direct response to unionisation efforts. The company maintains that the dismissals were due to the leaking of confidential information. The union, however, has condemned the action as union-busting and staged protests outside Rockstar and Take-Two offices in London and Edinburgh on Thursday, just as the delay was disclosed.
What’s Next for GTA VI?
Set in the fictional state of Leonida—an homage to Miami and Florida—GTA VI will return players to a modernised Vice City and introduce new protagonists, promising a sprawling, ambitious world. While Rockstar has yet to confirm a PC launch, analysts expect record-breaking sales, with some forecasts projecting up to $8 billion in revenue within two months of release.
Despite fan frustration over the extended wait and mounting controversies, anticipation for Grand Theft Auto VI shows no signs of slowing down, signalling another era-defining moment for open-world gaming upon its eventual launch.
