The Wikipedia killer? How Elon Musk's Grokipedia challenges human editors

In a bold move to challenge the dominance of Wikipedia, Elon Musk’s AI company xAI launched Grokipedia on October 27, 2025. Grokipedia is an AI-powered online encyclopedia that uses Musk’s proprietary Grok language model to generate and fact-check content. The platform aims to offer "the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth," positioning itself as a less biased alternative to Wikipedia, which Musk criticises for ideological slants, particularly left-leaning biases.

While Wikipedia relies on a global network of volunteer editors who collaboratively write, edit, and moderate content based on community guidelines, Grokipedia is driven primarily by AI-generated content. The site contains around 885,000 articles at launch, many of which closely mirror or are adapted from Wikipedia entries. Users cannot edit articles directly, but can submit correction suggestions through the platform.

Grokiapedia incorporates real-time updates powered by AI, allowing for near-instant content refreshes, a contrast to Wikipedia’s slower, human-led update process. However, critics caution that despite claims of greater objectivity, Grokipedia’s content has shown signs of right-wing biases and selective presentation, reflecting Musk’s viewpoints.

The Wikimedia Foundation, which governs Wikipedia, maintains that its open, volunteer-driven model with transparent sourcing and editorial policies remains the gold standard for reliable knowledge and points out that information generated by AI still depends heavily on Wikipedia’s human-curated content.
