Google tests ‘buy’ button on Gemini, AI mode to shop on Flipkart without leaving chat

Google is testing a new shopping feature in India that could allow users to purchase products from Flipkart directly through its AI-powered platforms, Gemini and AI Mode in Google Search, without navigating to the e-commerce website, according to a report by TechCrunch.

The feature is currently available to a limited number of users as part of an early trial. Select Flipkart product listings displayed on Gemini and AI Mode reportedly come with a ‘Buy’ button. Clicking on it opens a Flipkart-branded checkout interface within the AI platform, allowing users to proceed with their purchases without leaving the conversation.

The trial is limited to a small selection of products, including smartphones, electronic gadgets and mobile accessories, the report said. Google is reportedly planning a broader rollout in October, ahead of India's festive shopping season.

The development reflects Google's efforts to expand its AI services beyond answering queries and recommending products to facilitating transactions directly within its platforms.

The move comes as technology companies increasingly explore ways to integrate shopping into AI-powered services. OpenAI and Meta are also developing shopping and commerce features for their AI platforms, as companies look to turn AI-driven product discovery into a revenue-generating service.

However, the expansion of AI-powered shopping agents also depends on their ability to access online retail platforms. Amazon recently blocked Meta's personal AI agent, Muse, from accessing its shopping website, citing privacy and security concerns.

Google, meanwhile, said it regularly experiments with new features aimed at helping users discover businesses and services.

"Google is always testing new features and experiences to help people discover and connect with businesses more easily," a company spokesperson was quoted as saying in the report, adding that it had no further details to share.

The reported trial comes ahead of Flipkart's annual festive shopping event, the Big Billion Days Sale 2026. Early access to the sale is scheduled to begin on October 8, with the event opening to all customers on October 9.

Flipkart's Early Bird Deals began on September 24, offering discounts across categories such as smartphones, electronics, fashion, home appliances and beauty products.

The festive sale is expected to feature offers on smartphones, laptops, televisions and other electronic products, along with bank discounts and exchange deals.
