Chevrolet for just Rs 3,600? Vintage ad from 1936 goes viral on social media

A vintage Chevrolet advertisement  from 1936 has recently gone viral, sparking waves of nostalgia and amazement across social media. The ad, which dates back to a bygone era, features a 5-seater Chevrolet priced at just Rs 3,600, a number that seems almost laughable in comparison to today's car prices. But what makes this discovery even more fascinating is the reminder of how much the value of money has shifted over the decades.

A blast from the past

The advertisement, published in a newspaper, proudly promotes a “cheap and best” Chevrolet motorcar, selling for only Rs 2,700. In an age where car prices start at several lakhs in India, this number feels almost unreal.

The ad goes on to highlight another option—a 5-seater Chevrolet priced at Rs 3,675, emphasising its suitability for unpaved roads. What’s even more remarkable is that it offers delivery to major cities such as Calcutta, Delhi, Lucknow, and Dibrugarh. The comparison between these historical prices and what we pay for cars today is enough to make anyone do a double-take.

Social media reactions: A mix of awe and humour

As the ad resurfaced online, it quickly became a source of fascination for many. Social media users couldn’t help but marvel at how much things have changed over the years. One user jokingly posted on Instagram, “I am rich but in a different century.”

Another user took it further, commenting, “In the year 1936, the value of Rs 3,675 is now in 2024 worth Rs 3,67,50,000,” referencing the inflation-adjusted amount.

Others got in on the fun too, with one person adding, “I am rich, but my treasures belong to a bygone century.”

Some users even expressed disbelief at how expensive this must have seemed at the time, with one commenting, “Must be very costly at that time.”

Once a prominent brand, Chevrolet left the Indian market in 2017, but its nostalgic presence remains in the hearts of many.
