Microsoft Azure-linked AI outage? ChatGPT, Claude and Grok face widespread disruptions

A suspected Microsoft Azure infrastructure issue appears to be at the heart of simultaneous outages affecting OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude and xAI’s Grok on Thursday, according to a new report by 9to5Google.
All three affected platforms rely heavily on Microsoft Azure for cloud compute and related services, even as they also use other providers such as Google Cloud and AWS for parts of their infrastructure.
The timing and overlap have led engineers and users to speculate that a shared Azure component, such as a regional compute cluster, networking layer or identity service, may have triggered cascading failures across multiple AI providers. While none of the companies has publicly confirmed Azure as the root cause, the correlation in outage windows and the concentration of reports around Azure services make it a leading suspect.
Users report simultaneous failures
The overlap in reported outages quickly became a talking point on X, formerly Twitter, where users shared screenshots, error messages and jokes about suddenly losing access to their preferred AI tools. Downdetector also showed a sharp rise in user-submitted incident reports, signalling that the problem was affecting more than isolated accounts.
“Both Claude and ChatGPT are down. Makes you wonder if people were moving to ChatGPT because Claude is down and that caused an overload to ChatGPT...,” a user wrote in X.
Others expressed a mix of panic and humour as their primary daily workflows came to an abrupt halt. A user wrote on X, “ChatGPT and Claude both are down, what am I supposed to do now?”
Claude outage affects users
Claude users reported issues with chat access, coding workflows and API-based tools. Reports on Thursday indicated that the largest concentration of complaints involved Claude Code and Claude Chat, while Anthropic’s status information identified elevated errors across multiple models.
The incident highlights how heavily professionals now rely on generative AI platforms for programming, writing, research, customer support and daily productivity tasks. When several major providers encounter trouble at the same time, users have fewer practical fallback options.
