What lies behind the controversy over tennis's new genetic sex-testing policy

The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) has ignited a fierce global debate after introducing mandatory genetic sex testing for all players seeking to compete on the professional women’s tour. The policy requires a one-time screening for the SRY (Sex-determining Region Y) gene via a cheek swab, blood, or saliva sample. Refusal to undergo testing results in immediate disciplinary action and loss of tournament eligibility.
The Origins: A Global Regulatory Shift
The WTA’s decision marks a complete departure from its previous eligibility criteria, which permitted transgender women to compete provided they maintained suppressed testosterone levels below 2.5 nmol/L for two years.
Instead, the tennis body has adopted a strictly chromosomal standard, reflecting a broader domino effect across international sport. The move directly aligns tennis with the International Olympic Committee (IOC)—which mandated one-time genetic testing ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Games—as well as governing bodies like World Athletics, which abandoned the testosterone-suppression model in favour of genetic verification.
What the Controversy Is About
The policy has deeply fractured opinion across the sporting and human rights communities, focusing on three primary areas of friction:
1. Fairness vs Pre-emptive Exclusion
Proponents, including World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, have publicly supported the policy, arguing that distinct biological categories are necessary to preserve competitive fairness. However, there are currently no known transgender women competing at any level of professional tennis. Human rights group ILGA World condemned the move as an aggressive pre-emptive measure that forces all female athletes to "prove" their gender without operational necessity.
2. Human Rights and Stigmatisation
The Sport & Rights Alliance has urged the WTA to abandon the policy. Executive Director Andrea Florence warned that mandatory testing subjects female players to severe privacy risks, stating that "good intentions will never erase the stigmatisation and trauma that women and girls will suffer due to sex testing".
3. Scientific and Intersex Concerns
Genetic experts also caution that SRY testing is overly simplistic. The presence or absence of a single gene does not account for complex Differences of Sex Development (DSD)—such as Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome—where individuals with a Y chromosome develop physically as biological females without receiving athletic advantages from testosterone.
