New York: Carlos Alcaraz turned heads at the 2025 US Open with a bold new look, sporting a fresh buzz cut reminiscent of a David Beckham-style haircut. The Spanish tennis superstar’s dramatic hairstyle change did not go unnoticed, especially by tennis legend John McEnroe, who joked about it during the broadcast of Alcaraz’s first-round match against Reilly Opelka.

McEnroe quipped, “First of all, his haircut... did he get the buzz cut from his hair stylist in Spain? He brought him in at Wimbledon. I’m wondering because you can get that for 20 bucks in the city.” The legendary commentator poked fun at the simplicity of the haircut, insinuating it was an inexpensive choice rather than a glamorous style.

Alcaraz’s new haircut also drew diverse reactions within the tennis community. American player Frances Tiafoe described the look as “terrible” and “horrible,” adding humorously, “I guess you’re aerodynamic now.” Despite the criticism, Alcaraz himself appeared unfazed by the buzz and even delighted in the fresh start, telling Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy, “Just got a haircut that I struggled with. I mean, I had to start fresh.” McIlroy responded positively, saying, “Yeah, it’s good. I like it. It looks good on you.”

Maria Sharapova also weighed in positively, appreciating Alcaraz’s confidence and unique aura. She noted, “I’d be so superstitious. But that’s what you have to love about him, his ability to be so free and so confident and have this particular aura about him that transcends the game.”

On the court, Alcaraz stayed focused with his usual flair, winning his opening match in New York with a straight-sets victory over Reilly Opelka, 6-4, 7-5, 6-4, to progress to the second round.
