India's judo dream continues as Yamini Maurya bags women's 57kg silver

India's remarkable run on the judo mat continued in Glasgow, even if the gold slipped away by the narrowest of margins.

Yamini Maurya fought for an exhausting six minutes and 54 seconds before settling for the silver medal in the women's 57kg event at the Commonwealth Games 2026, losing a fiercely contested final to England's Acelya Toprak.

The title clash went the distance and entered a next-score-wins situation, with both judokas refusing to give an inch.

Yamini matched the pre-tournament favourite blow for blow but eventually lost after accumulating three Shidos (penalties), which resulted in an Ippon, handing Toprak a 100-0 victory.

The final was as much a test of endurance as technique, with both athletes pushed to their physical limits. Reflecting on the gruelling contest, Toprak told TNT Sports, 'I felt like I was dying; I don't know if it looked like it.'

South Africa's Donne Breytenbach and England's Lele Nairne claimed the bronze medals in the women's 57kg category.

Despite the heartbreak in the final, Yamini's silver capped another memorable day for Indian judo.

The country celebrated its first-ever two gold medals in the discipline at the Commonwealth Games, with Asmita Dey winning the women's 48kg title and Harsh Singh dominating Australia's Joshua Katz 10-0 in the men's 60kg final.

The strong showing marked a significant leap from Birmingham 2022, where India's lone judo medal was Tulika Maan's silver.

India's success on the judo mat also boosted its overall standing in Glasgow. The contingent climbed to ninth in the medals table with a tally of 20 medals, comprising five gold, 11 silver and four bronze.
