West Indies fined for slow over-rate in 1st England ODI: Shai Hope accepts sanction for offence

Harry Brook's debut as England's new ODI captain began with a commanding victory, as the team triumphed over the West Indies by an impressive 438 runs in the first match of the series on May 29 at Edgbaston, Birmingham. Youngster Jacob Bethell, who departed from the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) camp before the playoffs, hit five sixes in his 82 runs off 53 balls, helping England to a total of 400 for 8. In response, the West Indies were dismissed for just 162 runs, with England's bowlers Saqib Mahmood and Jamie Overton each claiming three wickets.
Penalisation: Another important news is that the West Indies have been penalized for a slow over-rate during their first ODI against England on May 29 at Edgbaston, Birmingham, as reported by the ICC website.
Match Referee Jeff Crowe from the Emirates ICC Elite Panel imposed a fine of five percent on each player's match fee after Shai Hope's team was found to be one over short of the required target at the end of the innings, taking time allowances into account.
This penalty aligns with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which addresses minimum over-rate violations. According to ICC rules, players are fined five percent of their match fee for each over their team fails to bowl within the designated time.
Captain's acceptance: West Indies captain Shai Hope accepted the penalty for the offense, and a formal hearing was not considered necessary. The charge was brought by on-field umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Martin Saggers, as well as third umpire Adrian Holdstock and fourth umpire Graham Lloyd. England achieved a significant victory, winning by 238 runs after scoring 400/8, thanks to impressive half-centuries from Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Harry Brook, and Jacob Bethell. In reply to England's large total, the West Indies were dismissed for 162, with Saqib Mahmood and Jamie Overton each taking three wickets. The second ODI between the two teams starts today.
