Pakistan hockey captain Ammad Shakeel Butt handed two-year ban over criticism of federation

Pakistan men’s hockey captain Ammad Shakeel Butt has been handed a two-year ban after publicly condemning the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) for severe mismanagement during the team’s troubled tour of Australia.
Tariq Bugti, the president of the Pakistan Hockey Federation, stepped down from his position following the team’s accommodation scandal during the troubled tour of Australia. Bugti announced that captain Ammad Butt has been banned for two years from all domestic and international hockey, accusing him and several players of “undermining” the federation. The remarks proved costly for Butt, as Bugti issued the ban after calling the captain’s public outburst an act that damaged the reputation of Pakistan hockey.
The decision follows Butt’s blistering remarks on the team’s return home, where he described players being left without proper lodging, forced to wander the streets, and even required to perform kitchen duties before international fixtures.
Captain’s outburst sparks disciplinary action
Speaking to reporters at Lahore Airport, Butt accused the federation of systemic failures throughout the Australia leg of the FIH Pro League. “We can't work with this current management of the federation. When players have to clean the kitchen and wash dishes before going to play a match what result do you expect from us?” he said.
He alleged that team members faced prolonged delays, no confirmed accommodation, and repeated instances where they were left without support. “Enough was enough,” he said, adding that players were instructed not to speak publicly about the ordeal.
Accommodation chaos in Australia
According to Butt, the squad endured a 13–14 hour wait at Sydney Airport before travelling onward to Canberra. On arrival at their hotel, players were told no advance payment had been made, leaving the team without booked rooms.
The players spent hours waiting – and at one point walking the streets – before temporary lodging was arranged. Their situation worsened when the team learned the Airbnb accommodation secured for them covered only 10 of the 13 days they were scheduled to stay. They were later moved to cheaper housing before the leg concluded.
Performance impact and FIH Pro League losses
Pakistan opened the Australia leg of the Pro League with a 2–3 defeat to the hosts and went on to lose all remaining fixtures, including matches against Germany.
Butt said the chaos before and during the tour directly affected performance and morale. “What was pathetic was that even the Airbnb accommodation was arranged for 10 days when we had to stay for 13 days,” he said.
Pakistan Sports Board confirms funds released
The Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) stated that it had already transferred more than 10 million rupees to the federation for hotel arrangements. PSB Director-General Noor us Sabah confirmed that a detailed report is being prepared for Pakistan’s prime minister, Shehbaz Sharif, who has ordered a formal inquiry.
Sharif, as patron-in-chief of the PHF, directed officials to investigate the mismanagement claims that triggered public outrage and ultimately the disciplinary action against the captain.
Butt defends speaking out
Butt said he chose to go public despite warnings from PHF officials. “I am speaking up because of what we have been through in Australia,” he said, stressing that improvements were essential for Pakistan hockey to progress.
He also called for changes in leadership and coaching. “We need a foreign coach if we have to move forward. We have a good combination of players but we need a foreign coach and good management,” he added.
