In a high-profile move that has sent ripples through the Indian sporting and political landscapes, tennis icon Leander Paes officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in New Delhi on Tuesday, 31 March 2026.

The 52-year-old Olympic medalist, who previously had a stint with the Trinamool Congress (TMC), stated that his entry into the party was "not just a formality but a responsibility." Speaking to the press, Paes emphasised his commitment to youth empowerment and sports development as India approaches several crucial state elections, including in his home state of West Bengal.

A hero’s welcome

The sporting fraternity has rallied behind the Grand Slam champion. In a particularly poignant exchange, cricket legend Kapil Dev reached out to congratulate his long-time friend. Dev shared his delight at the news, offering his unwavering support and promising to be there should Paes ever "need a hand" in his endeavours.

Paes responded warmly on X, drawing parallels between the 1983 World Cup winning captain and his own aspirations:

"Thank you Kapil Paaji! Your heartfelt message has inspired me once again for our India, just as you did in 1983. You are and will remain mine and the country’s hero forever."

Meanwhile, Leander Paes held a "courtesy meeting" with the Chief Minister of Delhi, Rekha Gupta, on Wednesday. Following the meeting, Gupta praised the veteran athlete’s commitment to public service. "Your extensive experience in the field of sports and your commitment towards the nation will surely prove useful for society," she posted, wishing him a "bright future" in this new chapter.

With the West Bengal polls looming, the BJP will hope that Paes’s legendary status and focus on ‘nation-building’ resonate with younger voters across the state.
