Glasgow 2026: Rupa Rani Tirkey, Pinki Singh extend winning streak in lawn bowls

Glasgow: India’s Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki Singh extended their impressive campaign in the women’s pairs sectional play at the Commonwealth Games 2026, whilst Putul Sonowal suffered his first loss in the men’s singles competition, according to Olympics.com. 

Tirkey and Singh secured their third consecutive triumph by edging past Tonga 5-2, 4-6, 1-0 in a tense tiebreaker. The victory preserved the Indian pair's undefeated record in Section B alongside England, who currently top the standings on set difference.

In the men's singles, Sonowal encountered his first setback of the sectional stage, falling 8-4, 9-8 against Malaysia's unbeaten Izzat Shameer Dzulkeple in his third Section D match.

Sonowal rallied from a 4-0 deficit in the opening set to close the gap to 4-3, but Dzulkeple pulled away in the final ends to secure the set 8-4. The Indian competitor subsequently conceded the second set 9-8.

The defeat leaves Sonowal second in Section D and eliminates his chances of capturing top spot. With only section winners progressing to the semi-finals, his knockout qualification hopes now hinge on remaining results within the group, according to Olympics.com.

Sonowal had previously claimed back-to-back victories against world champion Ryan Bester of Canada and Cecil Alexander of the Falkland Islands.

In artistic gymnastics, India's women's squad fell out of medal contention, finishing fifth in Subdivision 3 with an aggregate score of 93.150 through three rotations, with only the floor exercise remaining.

The four-member lineup featured Olympian Pranati Nayak alongside Nishka Agarwal, Protistha Samanta, and Eshitaa Rewale. Although the team missed out on a podium spot, Samanta and Nayak remain in line for the individual vault final, sitting third and seventh respectively, according to Olympics.com.

In 3x3 wheelchair basketball, the Indian women's team endured a difficult start to their Commonwealth Games campaign, suffering a 16-1 defeat against Wales in their opening Group B fixture. The squad, comprising Minakshi, Reena, Laxmi, and Ritu, is set to face Scotland and Nigeria in their remaining group matches on Monday.

In swimming, Indian competitors Dhakshan Shashikumar and Aryan Nehra failed to advance to the men's 400-metre freestyle final. Shashikumar placed seventh in Heat 3 with a time of 3:58.09, whilst national record holder Nehra clocked 4:00.26 in Heat 4, leaving both outside the top-eight qualification threshold in 15th and 16th place overall, according to Olympics.com.

India gained ground in boxing as Sachin Siwach moved into the men's 60kg round of 16 following a 4-1 decision over Canada's Keoma Al-Ahmadieh in his opening contest.

The win marked India's second success in the boxing ring at Glasgow 2026, following Jadumani Singh's commanding performance in the men's 55kg category on Friday.
