Army distance runner Gulveer Singh storms to historic 10,000m silver at Asian Games

Nagoya: Indian long-distance runner Gulveer Singh upgraded his Asian Games medal from bronze to silver in the men's 10,000m, clocking 28:29.38 to maintain his exceptional run on the international stage.

Gulveer, who secured bronze at the previous Asian Games in Hangzhou, crossed the line second behind Bahrain's Birhanu Balew, who captured gold in 28:27.51.

Bahrain's Albert Kipto rounded out the podium positions, finishing in 28:34.18 minutes to earn bronze.

The silver performance adds another significant accolade to Gulveer's collection this year, following a second-place finish at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

During those Commonwealth Games earlier this year, he claimed silver in the 10,000m and added a bronze medal in the 5,000m.

The 28-year-old, a serving Naib Subedar in the Indian Army, has demonstrated remarkable form over the past two years, having secured gold medals in both the 5,000m and 10,000m events at the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, South Korea.

He currently holds Indian national records across the 5,000m, 10,000m, one mile, and half marathon disciplines.

In 2025, he made history as the first Indian athlete to record a sub-four-minute mile, running 3:55.63, and became the first Indian to complete a half marathon in under 60 minutes with a time of 59:42.

Additionally, he became the first Asian runner to break the 13-minute threshold in the indoor 5,000m, setting a mark of 12:59.77.

Gulveer has been conducting his training preparation in Colorado Springs, United States, ahead of major international competitions.
