History arrived in Glasgow twice for Gulveer Singh.
Just days after ending India's long wait for a men's distance-running medal with a silver in the 10,000m, the 28-year-old returned to the track and delivered again, clinching bronze in the men's 5000m to become the first Indian athlete to win two track and field medals at a single Commonwealth Games.
The Indian distance-running ace clocked 13:24.95 to finish third in a fiercely contested final on Saturday, adding bronze to the silver medal he had secured in the 10,000m with a timing of 27:49.78.
The remarkable double places Gulveer in a league of his own in Indian Commonwealth Games history.
Kenya's Mathew Kipchumba Kipsang won the gold medal in 13:23.61, while Australia's Ky Robinson claimed silver with 13:24.70.
Gulveer executed a measured race before unleashing a powerful finishing burst when it mattered most.
After staying within striking distance through the early stages, he entered the final lap in fifth position and produced a stunning sprint to surge into the medal places, crossing the line just behind the leading pair.
The race demanded patience as much as pace. Gulveer settled into eighth after the opening lap before moving into fourth around the 1,000m mark.
He briefly slipped back to seventh midway through the contest but remained composed, conserving energy for the decisive final lap where his acceleration transformed a top-five finish into another podium appearance.
The achievement is another landmark in the inspiring rise of the Armyman from Atrauli in Uttar Pradesh.
Gulveer's running journey began on village roads and farmland trails while preparing for recruitment into the Indian Army.
Since joining The Grenadiers Regiment in 2018, he has steadily evolved into India's foremost long-distance runner.
Already a bronze medallist in the 10,000m at the 2022 Asian Games, Gulveer dominated the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, winning gold in both the 5,000m and 10,000m and establishing himself as Asia's leading distance runner.
His list of milestones continues to grow. Gulveer holds the Indian national records in the 5,000m, 10,000m, one mile and half marathon.
In 2025, he became the first Indian to run a sub-four-minute mile with 3:55.63 and the first Indian to complete a half marathon in under an hour, clocking 59:42.
He also shattered the Asian indoor 5,000m record with a time of 12:59.77, becoming the first Asian athlete to break the 13-minute barrier.
Training at the high-performance centre in Colorado Springs, Gulveer has emerged as the face of Indian distance running, and his historic Glasgow double further strengthens India's growing reputation on the global athletics stage.
