George Russell takes Barcelona Grand Prix pole after tight qualifying battle

George Russell secured pole position for the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix after a tightly contested qualifying session at Montmeló on Saturday, edging out Lewis Hamilton by just 0.064 seconds. The Mercedes driver delivered a strong final lap to claim his third pole of the 2026 season and the 10th of his Formula 1 career, describing the result as a return to feeling “in the groove” after a challenging weekend in Monaco.
Lewis Hamilton, driving for Ferrari, came close to pole with a late flying lap that placed him second on the grid, underlining Ferrari’s improved qualifying pace. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli, also in a Mercedes, secured third place after being pushed down in the final moments of the session despite a strong performance.
McLaren continued to show competitive form, with Lando Norris qualifying fourth and Oscar Piastri seventh, keeping them within striking distance for race day. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar took fifth and sixth respectively, ensuring a tightly packed fight across the front three rows.
Further down the order, Liam Lawson placed eighth for Racing Bulls, followed by Nico Hülkenberg in ninth, while Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc will start tenth after crashing during qualifying, though he was reported to be unharmed. The session highlighted how closely matched the field is heading into Sunday’s race, with multiple teams within a narrow performance window.
