Asian Games 2026: Elavenil Valarivan wins silver in shooting; India’s tally reaches 2

India added another medal to its Asian Games tally on the opening day as Elavenil Valarivan won silver in the women's 10m air rifle individual final.

Elavenil's podium finish came after she had earlier helped India secure silver in the women's 10m air rifle team event alongside Sonam Maskar and Vidarsa Vinod. The latest medal takes India's tally to two on the opening day.

Competing in the eight-shooter individual final, Elavenil produced a strong performance to finish second and secure her second silver of the day.

India's shooting contingent had earlier opened the country's medal account, with Elavenil, Sonam and Vidarsa winning silver in the women's 10m air rifle team final.

Elsewhere, Suchika Tariyal assured India of another medal after defeating Mongolia's Altanchimeg Baigalmaa in the women's Traditional 60kg MMA quarter-final and advancing to the semi-finals. Her achievement marks India's first-ever Asian Games medal in MMA.

The women's hockey team also made a commanding start, defeating Uzbekistan 19-0 in their pool match. Deepika Sehrawat scored eight goals, setting a tournament record for the most goals by an individual in a single match.

In table tennis, India registered 3-0 victories over Indonesia in both the women's and men's team Group F matches.

In swimming, Rishabh Das qualified for the men's 100m backstroke final after finishing fifth in the heats. Utkarsh Patil finished 12th. In the men's 100m freestyle heats, Benediction Beniston placed 12th, while Akash Mani finished 23rd.

In wushu, Suraj Singh Mayanglambam finished 11th in the men's Changquan final. India's teqball campaign ended without a medal after Quimcy Dsouza lost the women's singles bronze-medal match to Japan's Yuina Sakamoto, while Quimcy and Mohamed Anas Beg also lost the mixed doubles bronze-medal match to Vietnam.

India's women's cricket team is also set to face Bangladesh in the semi-final.
