Amid Opposition criticism, Kerala govt announces cash prizes for 2022 Asian Games medallists

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala government has announced cash prizes for 2022 Asian Games medallists in the state. The move comes at a time when the Opposition has been targeting the government over alleged apathy towards medal-winning sportspersons in the state.
As per the government’s decision, Rs 25 lakh each will be given to Asian Games gold medallists. Silver medallists will get Rs 19 lakh, while bronze medallists will get Rs 12.5 lakh each.
The decision comes after the cabinet meeting held on Wednesday.
A few days ago, Leader of Opposition VD Satheesan sought immediate intervention from Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in preventing the exodus of successful sportspersons owing to lack of recognition in Kerala.
"It has come to notice that those who come with medals do not get the proper treatment that they desire and it has caused them deep heartbreak, especially when what’s promised to them is not given. We know of such personalities running from pillar to post for the promised government jobs. This attitude towards them by the government has to change and they should be given all the due respect and the promises to them should be kept," the letter said.
Satheesan had highlighted the case of badminton star H.S.Prannoy, and triple jumpers Eldhose Paul and Abdulla Aboobacker.
