Houston: Veteran midfielder Casemiro played an influential role in Brazil’s 2-1 Round of 32 win over Japan in the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026 on Tuesday, as he registered one remarkable milestone and another unwanted record during the knockout clash.

The midfielder, who also found the net in the first half, has now become the second-oldest Brazilian goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history, aged 34 years and 126 days, behind only Bebeto.

Oldest Brazilian World Cup goalscorers:

  • Bebeto – 34y, 137d
  • Casemiro – 34y, 126d
  • Thiago Silva – 33y, 278d

However, it was not the only record of the night. The Brazil midfielder was also booked once again, taking his tally to a level matched only by legends of the game.

Casemiro has now been shown his fifth yellow card at a World Cup, placing him among the most cautioned players in tournament history. Only Javier Mascherano and Cafu have received more bookings on the World Cup stage.

Despite the disciplinary record, Casemiro’s influence remained crucial as Brazil fought back from a goal down before Gabriel Martinelli’s late winner sealed progression to the last 16.

Brazil will next face either the Ivory Coast or Norway on Sunday in East Rutherford, New Jersey, in the round of 16.

Japan midfielder Kaishu Sano scored a classy solo goal after 29 minutes following a Brazil mistake to stun the huge numbers of fans decked out in yellow.

Carlo Ancelotti's men hit back 11 minutes after half-time with a header from veteran Casemiro as Brazil dominated the second period.

Then up popped Martinelli right at the death to settle it and send the Brazil fans wild.
