From rival confederations to joint tournament? UEFA and CONCACAF plan unified Nations League

Nyon: The global football landscape could be set for a significant realignment as UEFA and CONCACAF engage in discussions regarding a potential merger of their respective Nations League competitions, opening the door for top European nations to compete regularly against leading teams from North and Central America.
According to a report by Goal.com, the unified competition could be introduced as early as autumn 2028 under a restructured, tiered format.
The move comes amid ongoing friction within the international game following the FIFA Forward Enterprise initiative, which sought to introduce private investment into FIFA events, notably the FIFA World Cup, before being withdrawn following strong opposition from member associations.
While FIFA's initiative faltered, relations between UEFA and CONCACAF have strengthened, with both governing bodies withdrawing support for FIFA president Gianni Infantino as he seeks to retain his position. However, citing an ESPN report, Goal.com noted that the proposed tournament expansion is not a direct consequence of the dispute between FIFA and its member federations.
For CONCACAF powerhouses such as the United States and Mexico, the arrangement would offer regular access to high-calibre opponents. Previously, North American teams relied on international friendly windows to schedule fixtures against European opposition. However, the creation of the UEFA Nations League has effectively filled those windows, leaving North America's top sides with limited opportunities to face elite teams.
The United States are scheduled to play four fixtures across September and October against Peru, Chile, Mexico, and Canada. While US Soccer acknowledges the utility of those matches, a unified Nations League would grant them more frequent exposure to top-tier opposition.
Plans for the tournament remain a work in progress, though ambition to deliver the project remains high. Discussions are focused on maintaining the tiered league structure currently utilised by both confederations, though cross-continental travel logistics alongside promotion and relegation mechanics present ongoing challenges.
The target start date has been pushed to 2028 due to congestion in the international match calendar. With both the CONCACAF Nations League and UEFA Nations League scheduled to begin next month, an autumn 2028 launch is viewed as the most practical timeline.
Beyond the sporting aspect, the commercial prospects are considerable. The joint venture would allow UEFA to expand its commercial footprint in the lucrative North American market, where interest in the sport has surged ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
