Seoul: In an emotional pre-season friendly in Seoul, Son Heung-min received a tearful farewell from his Tottenham teammates, Newcastle players, and nearly 65,000 fans, a day after announcing his departure from the club after a decade. The match between the two Premier League teams ended in a 1-1 draw at Seoul World Cup Stadium, with the highlight being Son's likely final appearance for Tottenham. The 33-year-old captain was visibly emotional, surrounded by players from both sides before eventually taking his place on the bench.

Tottenham coach Thomas Frank described the scene as "beautiful," noting the emotional atmosphere in the changing room after the team's walk around the pitch. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe also paid tribute to the South Korea forward, highlighting the instinctive reaction of his players as a testament to Son's standing as "one of the game’s great Premier League players," recognised not just for his talent but also for his conduct.

Son, who has been linked with a move to Los Angeles FC, departs Tottenham as the club's fifth all-time top scorer, having netted 173 goals in 454 games. Despite his efforts, he was unable to add to his tally in his farewell match. However, his famous "camera" goal celebration was emulated by Brennan Johnson, who gave Tottenham an early lead in the fourth minute with a low shot. Harvey Barnes equalised for Newcastle seven minutes before halftime, firing home after cutting in from the left.

The match also saw a concerning moment when Tottenham midfielder James Maddison was stretchered off with less than ten minutes remaining. Coach Frank confirmed fears that it was "the same knee he injured before," suggesting Maddison is likely to miss the upcoming UEFA Super Cup against Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain on August 13, just two days before the Premier League season kicks off.
