Foxborough: In one of the most seismic upsets in FIFA World Cup history, Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill emerged as the defining figure during their Round of 32 clash against Germany. At the Boston Stadium in Foxborough, the 26-year-old shot-stopper produced a career-defining performance that brought the four-time world champions to their knees.

A Goalkeeping Masterclass

Throughout 120 minutes of intense football, Gill was a pillar of defiance against a relentless German attack. He recorded six saves during regulation and extra time, constantly frustrating Germany’s forward line with authoritative claims and sharp reflexes. His influence extended into the final minutes of extra time when he was involved in a decisive VAR moment; a potential go-ahead goal for Germany’s Jonathan Tah was disallowed after officials ruled that Waldemar Anton had fouled Gill in the build-up, preserving the 1-1 deadlock.

Shootout Heroics

The match ultimately went to a penalty shootout—a format in which Germany had historically been nearly perfect. Prior to this encounter, Germany had won six of their seven previous major tournament shootouts. However, Gill proved to be the difference-maker under pressure.

Gill saved crucial spot-kicks from Kai Havertz and Nick Woltemade. While the shootout drama extended into sudden death, Gill’s two saves provided the foundation for Paraguay’s 4-3 victory. Speaking on his preparation, Gill later noted: "Obviously, we analysed every player and every detail of the penalty-takers... Thank God I was able to save two penalties. This is a privilege; we eliminated a champion."

A Night for the History Books

The win marks Paraguay’s first-ever victory over Germany in a penalty shootout at a World Cup, a feat that has shattered the long-standing myth of German invincibility from 12 yards. For Gill, the performance has catapulted him into the spotlight, transforming him from a reliable presence into a national hero for the landlocked South American nation.

Following the match, Paraguay’s captain Gustavo Gomez expressed the team’s collective pride: "I’m very proud of my teammates and of this group. Today was a match in which we had to be Paraguay more than ever."

Paraguay now advances to the Round of 16, where they are scheduled to face the winner of the France versus Sweden fixture on 4 July in Philadelphia.
